It seems like an individual have spotted a trash bag full of personal and confidential information outside one of Ladbrokes's betting shops in Glasgow, Scotland. It seems that the documents contained information like names, addresses, contact numbers and a lot other sensitive data.
According to the news provider The Guardian, the data that was found included information about customers who opted in to sign up for MOSES which stands for Multi Operator Self-Exclusion Scheme. This Ladbrokes scheme enables customers to self exclude and voluntarily ban themselves from placing anymore bets. Citing from some information about MOSES provided by the news agency clearly states that; "Your personal details are kept confidential and only shared with the participating bookmakers their group companies’ and the central team administrators."
In light of all this and to further reports from The Guardian, the UK Gambling Commission said that it will be looking into this matter and will proceed with further investigation to make sure that all client's sensitive and personal data are safe guarded and discarded in a way that their details are not stolen and miss used.
According to the news agency, Executive director Tim Miller said that;
"Customers trust that their personal data will be collected carefully and then protected properly. We expect gambling operators to adhere to all data protection laws or regulations, which are enforced by the Information Commissioner’s Office. In an instance where personal data has been breached, we would expect operators to do whatever they can to mitigate any harm caused."
It is now understood that Ladbrokes officials have sent a notification to all their outlets to make sure that the disposing of confidential information is properly disposed and that an internal investigation is being carried out to make sure that the disposal procedure is working as expected and is as leak-proof as possible.
